Family Matters is a family-centered organization in the North of Howard neighborhood
that seeks to be a catalyst for change – building and strengthening the community
through programs that support personal growth and leadership. We strive to be a
safe, positive second home where families of diverse culture and experience come
together and find equal acceptance, encouragement and challenge. We believe the
community must determine its own needs and can meet those needs through a partnership
comprising neighborhood residents, staff, volunteers and donors. We encourage respect
for self and others and practice three principles of leadership:
1. utilizing peaceful conflict resolution,
2. embracing positive thinking and language and
3. understanding choices and consequences.
Founded in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 juvenile diabetes, JDRF has always
focused on a single goal—accelerating research progress to cure diabetes and its
devastating complications. Usually striking during childhood, this most severe form
of the disease annually accounts for almost $100 billion in health care costs in
the U.S. alone. Chosen by Barron's as one of only four charities that are leaders
in efficiency and effectiveness, more than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly
support research and research-related education.
Right Angle is an educational foundation which provides financial support for high
school students in the inner city. Right Angle sends about 60 high school kids to
college summer programs to improve their academic skills and gain exposure to campus
life. The majority of these students are from low-income families. Because of this
program over 85% of the participating kids go on to 4 year colleges. What makes
this so remarkable is that these students come from schools where the percentage
of students who go on to 4 year colleges is typically less than 15%.
While Evanston children sit side-by-side in classrooms during the school year, they
spend their summers in very different worlds. Children of the economically advantaged
are enrolled in swim lessons, sports camps, drama classes, and other special programs.
Their summers are rich with opportunities for fun, self-expression, skill building,
and personal development. In contrast, children of families living below the poverty
line are often left behind. Nearly one out of every three children in Evanston comes
from a family that cannot afford such extras. The Ted Fund addresses this glaring
need by leveling the playing field. The Fund enables public school children from
families with limited financial resources to take part in quality, fee-based summer
camps which other Evanston children take for granted.
